The Healthy Southerner says: Read It!
Told in alternating voices, The Salt House is a layered, emotional portrait of marriage, family, friendship, and the complex intersections of love, grief, and hope.
Don’t get me wrong- it’s captivating and entertaining. I’d absolutely sit on the beach and escape with this book, but it’s not light-hearted and fun.
The story, told by different members of the same tragedy, starts slow, but by the end, you’ll be holding your breath. The subject matter is difficult, a baby has died at the beginning of the novel, and we watch as those left behind are left to deal with their lives.
Duffy is masterful at alternating voices, and the plot continues to twist and turn until the very end.
